Give Yourself to Love by Kate Wolf

Kind friends all gathered round: there's something I would say,
That what brings all together here has blessed us all today.
Love has made a circle that holds us all inside.
Where strangers are as family and loneliness can't hide.

You must give yourself to love if love is what you're after.
Open up your hearts to tears and laughter.
Give yourself to Love, give yourself to Love.

Walked these mountains in the rain, I've learned to love the wind.
Been up before the sunrise to watch the day begin.
I always knew I'd find you though I never did know how.
But like sunshine on a cloudy day you stand before me now.

Love is born in fire, it's planted like a seed.
Love can't give you everything but it gives you what you need.
Love comes when you are ready, Love comes when you're afraid.
It will be your greatest teacher, the best friend you have made.

Translation of the Latin text of Faure's Requiem (tr. Arnold vander Nat © 1999).

SANCTUS
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra
gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of hosts.
The heavens and earth are filled
with thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

IN PARADISUM
In paradisum deducant te angeli,
in tuo adventu
suscipiant te martyres,
et perducant te
in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.
Chorus angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
aeternam habeas requiem.

May the angels lead you into paradise,
may the martyrs receive you
in your coming,
and may they guide you
into the holy city, Jerusalem.
May the chorus of angels receive you
and with Lazarus once poor
may you have eternal rest.

When I Must Leave You

When I must leave you for a little while,
Please go on bravely with a gallant smile.
And for my sake and in my name,
Live on and do all things the same.
Spend not your life in empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways:
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer,
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near.

With Respects to Wordsworth...

She lived among the untrodden ways
beside the springs of dove.
A soul whom many friends would praise
and many hearts would love.
A violet by a mossy stone
half-hidden from the eye.
Fair as a star when only one
is shining in the sky.
Though not well known
still we all knew when Lucy
cease'd to be.
She's free at last, and oh, the precious
blessing left for thee.

"Give Yourself to Love"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwUwJgRBMcw&feature=related

At 41:15 you can see and hear Kate Wolf singing this song.

Poem

You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she is gone,
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Or....you can do ALL of those things

because

"To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven."

"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Memorial Service

We are here today to honor Lucy Batchelor, the matriarch of my family, a strong and courageous woman, a fun and adventurous spirit, a friend to her comrades at Sunshine Center and Silver Sneakers, and a faithful member of her congregation.

Thank you for coming. I know many of you feel a special love and affection for my mom. Joe and I want to give you this space in time to voice your gratitude, share your memories, and process some of your sadness.

This chapel has been a sanctuary for many, and it was my safe haven while caring for my mother and observing, for the first time, the process of dying.
I invite you to relax into silence, absorb the love in this room, collect your thoughts and memories, and feel Lucy in your heart.

After the music and prayer you are welcome to express your gratitude for your friend. May we all benefit from sharing our love for Lucy.
Kathy

Optimistic, happy, musical, caring

Lucy Emma Batchelor, 85, of St Petersburg Fla. 33714, passed away quietly Friday June 5, 2009 at Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Fla. Optimistic, happy, musical and caring. Everyone who knew Lucy describes her that way. She was born on November 21, 1923 in Unity Township, Ohio. She was the daughter of Clyde and Cathrine Klitz Wilhelm. She worked as a secretary at Fitzpatricks Industries, East Palestine, Ohio and was a homemaker. In 1990, she and her husband George moved to Florida where she worked as a caregiver for Bayshore Homecare in Fla. Friends, music, faith and family were all important to Lucy. She was an active member of the United Church of God and had many friends at the Sunshine Center. She is survived by a brother, Clarence, of North Lima, Ohio; by four children, James of Reno Nev., Robert of East Palestine Ohio, Kathryn Terry of Seminole Fla., Michael of Fairview, Pa.; and by six Grandchildren and four Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, who she married June 29, 1944 and by three brothers Delmer, Norman, and Glen Wilhelm, and by a grandson Christopher Batchelor. Burial will be in Bay Pines National Cemetery. A celebration of her life by her children and friends will follow. Memorials may be sent to Woodside Hospice, 6774 102nd Ave. N. Pinellas Park, FL 33782-2909 or to the charity of ones choice.

A Special and Honorable Mother

Hi Kathy and family,

I am so sorry for your great loss--and it was a Great loss-- but am grateful that Lucy didn't linger and suffer more.
I have not had much contact recently but I always thought she was a very special lady. As others, I remember her cheery, smiling face and positive friendly manner. She was always happy when we would meet and I always enjoyed talking with her and doing things together. I have good memories of singing alto together in the choir and sharing laughs in our other activities. She is one very sweet lady and I look forward to seeing her again in the Kingdom. She stayed the course and brought delight to many. You are fortunate to have had such a Special and honorable Mother. You are in my prayers. Love, Carol Rust

I will miss her

Your mom was a very special lady & I will miss her
very much as will all the people that knew her.

Faye from Silver Sneakers

What a grand lady!

What a grand lady! Lucy always had a smile on her face and a willingness to help. Even as she got older she still played the piano if we had a need. Lucy had a love for her family and life itself that will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Lucy, until we see you again in the Kingdom!

David Treybig

Gentle, self confident, considerate, kind, unassuming

Lucy always seemed to me to be gentle, self confident,
considerate, kind, unassuming and would giggle with subdued delight when something good happened that she would be glad for. She seemed to be genuinely fond of her family and most appreciatiove of even the smallest gestures of kindness extended to her by others.

Brady

Always ready for a bit of fun

Kathy,

We are saddened at the loss of your mother and our friend and sister. It is comforting to know that she is resting without pain until Christ’s return. I have so many pleasant memories of Lucy – she had such a genuine smile, a hearty laugh and was always ready for a bit of fun. I will miss her cheery disposition and positive outlook, as well as her care and concern for those around her. She was a dear lady!

Enjoyed Singing

Please pass my condolences to your family. Lucy and I spoke on the phone every morning for a very long time. I know she enjoyed singing at the Sunshine Center every Tuesday. I will say a special prayer for her.
Thank you for letting me know.
Dolores.

Oh, how she loved her Music!

Hello Kathy,
This is Ellen Noel,
Dave has moved to Ohio and he and I both want to send our
love and prayers to you Kathy, your mother and your family.

I personally will always remember being greeted by your mom at the door at the St.
Petersburg church. She always had a smile for everyone, but the children always made her glow.
Oh how she loved her music. I understand where you get your passionate love of music.
Lucy, you shared with everyone a piece of yourself every time you played a hymn.
Thank you for giving us that part of yourself.
You always welcomed us with open arms. I am forever grateful to you
for your beautiful smile. The kind words that you always had and the interest you showed
in what others were doing in there lives.
My peace be with you our dear friends,
Dave and Ellen Noel

Fun-loving and Adventurous

Lucy was always kind and generous when we came to St. Petersburg for visits in Dec. She would share her grapefruits with us until the tree blew down in a storm.

Soon after we moved to Florida we had an opportunity to spend the day with Kathy and Lucy at the water park by Busch Gardens. Lucy was fun loving and adventurous, not afraid to go down the slides ending with a big splash. We also enjoyed floating leisurely on inner tubes around the Rambling Bayou.

I remember visiting her home after the women's retreat. Her house was filled with photos and momentos of her family. She loved and was so proud of each and every one of them.

She served the church in a humble way with her radiant smile and sharing her love of music. I spoke with her after the feast last year and she was so grateful to spend the feast in Branson with Beulah and Chuck Little.

We are thankful to have had the opportunity to share many wonderful times with Lucy and her family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Fran, Larry, Sarah & Teri Haney

In our Hearts

Our hearts and prayers are with Lucy as she goes through this trial. We
have known her for many years and were always happy to see her smiling face. We
are praying and hoping for the best for her and know God will work everything
out for her good.

She holds a dear place in Carla's and my hearts.

Jim and Carla Guy

What an honor to know Lucy

Hi Kathy,
I have gotten to know your mom just over the last few years but what an honor I consider it to be. She has got to be one of the most uplifting and encouraging persons God ever created. I know it's no secret to you how much we all love and respect her.
Hi Lucy,
We have a couple of pictures to share from Night To Be Much Observed, 2009. It was indeed a lovely, memorable evening. As per usual, Lucy, you are smiling.
Love and Prayers,
Cathy & Marty :)

Mom's Favorite Chorus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2MzTMse4_8

"March of the Hebrew Slaves"

Positive and Spunky

Lucy has always been so positive and spunky. I never heard a negative word from her. Mike (her youngest son) inherited her no-nonsense attitude. I'm sure she is very proud of how wonderful her kids turned out.

Kay and Coog

Wish it were better

Dear Lucy and Family,

It was my pleasure to have met you and your caring family. I appreciate the opportunity to have helped you during this time. I only wish that we were facing a better situation.

Victoria

Loves Music

Lucy loves music so much and one of her favorites is, I believe,
"Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" It was sung often at the Feast of
Tabernacle in Italy. She has an audio tape of the piece. I'll bet she
would love to hear it about now.
She's such a dear, sweet lady. Nothing can diminish that thought.

Gene and Barbara

Her smile lights up a room!

Kathy, your Mom has always been such a joy-her smile lights up a room! She never failed to come up to me and give a warm greeting-a wonderful example for us all.

Carl and Anita Gennaro

Always has a cheerful word

We heard that your mom is not doing well at all. I am so sorry for you all. I have been praying for the family and especially that your mom won't be in pain. Amazingly good things can happen with lots of fervent prayer at any point in someone's illness. I have seen people totally turn around in a short time. I am hoping for the best.
Every time we ever come to visit at the St. Pete church, your mom always greets me with a big smile. She really makes me feel comfortable. She always seems to have a cheerful word to say.
Again, you are continually in our thoughts.
Hugs,
Camille

Reflection

Kathy,

We're so sorry your Mom is sick! Thanks for writing to let us know. We'll pray for her, and you, and the whole family!
We've never met her, except that we know you, and you must be a shining reflection of her! She done good.

Love,

Scott and Peggy Moss

Love, Compassion, Music

Thank you, Kathy, for inviting the church members to share with you and your mother this difficult time. What a precious gift it is to walk down memory lane and resurrect those dear memories of your mother's influence in other's lives.
I don't know your mother, but I do know you. I can only imagine how dear your mother is because I see your love for others, your compassion, your love for music. Just reading the couple of entries here, Kathy, it would appear you take after your mom.
May God support her and your family with peace and grace in these hours of questions and pain.
We keep all of you in our prayers.
Helen Wierenga

She was a fine lady

So sorry to hear about your Mom. Sounds like it is a fast moving cancer. I can only imagine what you are going through. Yes, she was a fine lady. She was always good to us while we were there, and I will always remember the honor she and you gave Arthur of presiding over the burial of your father.

Our prayers are with you and your family at this time as you struggle to let go of your Mother and learn to live without her.

Much love to you and Joe; and kind thoughts to the rest of your family.

Arthur and Marsha

Beautiful Smile, Energy, Quick Wit

DEAR LUCY,
I HAVE MANY MEMORIES OF YOU OVER THE YEARS- VISITING YOU IN YOUR OHIO HOME- YOU MADE KATHY AND I A DELIGHTFUL SOUP WITH VEGETABLES FROM YOUR GARDEN WHEN WE ARRIVED FROM TX ON A SCHOOL BREAK.
.... THEN THERE WAS THE YEAR THAT YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND RENTED MY APARTMENT IN PASADENA FOR THE FEAST. I FELT APPRECIATIVE AND HONORED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE YOU STAY IN MY HOME.
ONE YEAR I CAME TO THE FLORIDA, AND I RECALL SEEING YOUR HOME AND SHARING A NUMBER OF MEALS TOGETHER.
I REMEMBER YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE, ENERGY, QUICK WIT, AND LOVE OF FINE THINGS- INCLUDING MUSIC. FINALLY, I TREASURE THE SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP I HAVE SHARED WITH YOUR DAUGHTER (AND HER FAMILY) OVER SO MANY YEARS- SHE HAS INHERITED MANY OF YOUR DELIGHTFULLY ENGAGING TRAITS.
THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU. PLEASE KNOW YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
WITH LOVE & HUGS,
SUE BLUMEL-BERG
PS- PERHAPS KATHY HAS MENTIONED THAT I AM LOSING MY OWN MOTHER SLOWLY, TO ALZHEIMERS. IT IS DIFFICULT FOR ALL OF US, BUT HAS DEEPENED OUR APPRECIATION FOR EACH OTHER, FOR WHAT BEING A FAMILY MEANS, AND ALL THE BLESSINGS (AND CHALLENGES) WHICH COME WITH THE "PACKAGE".

Second Mom

Lucy..........I remember our 1979 trip to Florida as one of the best road trips of my life!!!! You put up with my driving....we chatted the whole way........and you made me feel "not quite so nervous" about the whole move to Florida. You always had a way of looking at life very practically and it calmed my nerves. I especially remember stopping at "South of the Border" with you......do you know I still have that very first beach towel I bought there??? Wow, what memories!!!

I needed a second mom in Florida, since my mom was so far away, and you were like that to me. Very welcoming, with a lovely sincere laugh that reminded me of home.

As years went on, your example of a hard-working, strong but loving wife/mother added to my mental list of "that's how I want to be". Even tho' you may not have known it.....your example helped me make my way in the adult world. You appeared to me as a good example of Philippians 4:13...."I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"........and I can't thank you enough for that example.

Thank you for your influence in my life.......the love you showed me.......and the knowledge that I had a second mom in Florida when I needed one. I love you!!! Cindy Drew

Always there and Smiling

The things I remember about Lucy are that she was always there and smiling. She always made me feel welcome and accepted. Even in past years when I really felt like I was struggling she would put her arm around me and I really felt loved. That is really a priceless gift. I never heard her bad mouth anyone and you did hear her stand up for what is right and proper. I like that she would always be up for anything--she loved adventures. She has been a role model for me. I love you Mrs. Batchelor!

A tribute to Lucy Batchelor

My Mom, Lucy Batchelor, is resting tonight at a hospice facility in Pinellas Park, Florida. She was admitted there yesterday afternoon after spending a few days at St. Pete General Hospital due to an advanced case of Diffuse Large B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, diagnosed just 10 days ago.
Her rapid decline after diagnosis has been shocking to us all, and this blog is a way for everyone who knows Lucy to publish their tributes, prayers, precious memories, and pictures of her. Please notify any of her friends and relatives that you know and ask them to contribute to this blog which will be read to her as the messages come in and published in a book for her family.

Grateful-daughter,
Kathy Terry
